This blog will likely be confusing to many, but I hope it will be of interest to some people familiar with both English and Japanese or who are students of either language. I am focusing on the differences between similar words in Japanese and English, words which would simply be translated across as if an equivalent exists in another language. In truth, I feel no two words are the same in any two languages. You will notice that I include in my lists not complicated philosophical ideas but everyday language, and that these differences even exist in simple nouns such as "cat". But it is very true that these words are not the same in the two languages, they are portrayed differently in pictorial depictions and the concepts surrounding them are not the same. They are the same only in as far as both words are called to mind and verbally expressed in description of a certain four-legged creature. But this link with a physical object or a physical action is only a part of the meaning of the words listed in this blog, and in some cases form only a marginal or extremity of the meaning of the word. The word in fact expresses a concept- true connection with the essence of a cat is impossible.
